The story of the Iams pet food starts back to the 1940s, when dogs and cats were predominantly fed home made food, which typically consisted of table scraps. Paul Iams, who was an animal nutritionist, decided to take a different approach to pet feeding and nutrition. After he graduated from Ohio State University, he worked for a number of different companies, including his father’s feed business located  in Dayton, Ohio.  He then founded the Iams Company back in 1946 in a little feed mill near Dayton. In 1950, he developed animal based protein dry dog food, which he named Iams 999. In 1969, he formulated a new dog food and called it Eukanuba.
